Enable Bit Locker Encryption (Windows 10)

Introduction

The bit locker encryption is a feature in Windows 8 and 10 Professional and Enterprise and the Ultimate version of Windows 7, which allow you to keep your data safe on your computer especially if you are using a laptop, it’s more about preventing your private data from falling into the wrong hands if you lose your device, or it gets stolen.

The bit locker encryption is the process of making your data unreadable by anyone without authorization. If you use encryption to encrypt your data, and only you with the right encryption key can make decrypt your data again.

For best results, the computer must support a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip. This is a special microchip that enables your device to support advanced security features.

If the computer doesn’t support TPM so you need to do the following steps to ensure that you can turn on BitLocker without TPM.

How to ensure you can turn on BitLocker without TPM

In this case, you will need to use the Local Group Policy on the computer to enable additional authentication at startup.

1- Open Run or open Windows+R then write gpedit.msc, and click OK.

2-Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates.

3-Expand Windows Components.

4-Expand BitLocker Drive Encryption and Operating System Drives.

5-On the right side, open Require additional authentication at startup.

6- Select Enabled and Make sure to check the “Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM (requires a password or a startup key on a USB flash drive)” option.

7- Then press OK.

How to Enable BitLocker on Your Computer Drives:

1- Open Control panel.

2- Click on System and security.

3- Click BitLocker Drive Encryption.

4- In BitLocker Drive Encryption, click Turn on BitLocker.

5- Select how you want to unlock your drive during startup: Insert a USB flash drive or Enter a password, in this case, we will use Enter a password then continue.

6- Enter a password that you will use every time you boot Windows to unlock the drive and click Next to continue. 

7- You will have the choices to save a recovery key in case you forget your password, You must choose how to save the password and then click next.

8- Choose the encryption option that best suits your scenario.

In this case, we will choose “Encrypt used disk space only (faster and best for new PCs and drives)”

9- Then choose between the two encryption options:

  • New encryption mode (best for fixed drives on this device)
  • Compatible mode (best for drives that can be moved from this device)

10-  You must ensure to check the Run BitLocker system check option, and click Continue.

11- Restart your computer to begin the encryption process.

On startup the windows, BitLocker will prompt you to enter your encryption password to unlock the drive. Type the password and press Enter.
