Windows 10 User Account Types

Windows 10 User Account Types

Introduction:
In the new Windows 10 installation, it is required to create a user account. The first account you create will always be an Administrator account, which allows you to manage every aspect of your computer. However, later when you need to share your computer with family members or friends the default choice will be Standard User, which are more restricted, and sometimes it may not be the best option.

Windows 10 Account Types:
Windows 10 offers two account types: Administrator and Standard User.
Note: Now in Windows 10, Guest User Account is a special type of Standard User accounts.

  • Administrator Accounts have complete control over a computer. these accounts can change settings globally, install programs, get through the User Account Control (UAC) when elevation to perform a task is required, and everything else.
  • Standard Accounts have more limited control. Users with this type of account can run applications, but they can’t install new programs. Users can change system settings, but only settings that won’t affect other accounts. If a task requires elevations, the user will be prompted for admin credentials.

You can create a new user account from Settings Page → Accounts → Family and other people
then under Other People Section press Add someone else to this PC

NOTE: you can create new accounts as either local accounts (can be used only on this PC and no need to have a Microsoft email account), or cloud account (Live or Outlook or Hotmail) which need email id to be created and can be used to login to other pcs and Sync your data between different PCs.

How to Change Account Types

Change a User Account Type Using Settings Window:

  1. Use the Windows Key + I key to open the Settings app.
  2. Click Accounts.
  3. Click Family & other people.
  4. Other people section, select the user account and click Change account type.

 5. Under the Account Type drop list, select Administrator from the drop-down menu.

6. Click OK to complete the task.

If the user was using an Administrator account, you could use the same instructions to change the type to a Standard User account.

Furthermore, Microsoft introduced a new feature called Assigned access, where you can limit access to specific apps for certain users.
This option can be applied from Settings Page → Accounts → Family and other people
then under Other People Section, press Setup assigned access
