Email Security With SPF, DKIM, and DMARC

Introduction:

Improving email security and protecting against phishing campaigns, spam and other types of email-based attacks is the basis of good cybersecurity hygiene.

In this article we will describe some protocols that can be used to secure your emails , This can be used in Office 365 or other Email providers.

The benefits of implementing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC:

• stops email spoofing/phishing from your domain;
• provides important information about the emails you sent, which can be used get all legitimate emails properly authenticated.

1- SPF(Sender Policy Framework)

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is an email validation system, designed to prevent unwanted emails using a spoofing system. To check this common security problem, SPF going to verify the source IP of the email and compare it with a DNS TXT record with a SPF content.

2- DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)

DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), lets the organization take responsibility for a message that is in transmit. DKIM attaches a new domain name identifier to a message and uses cryptographic techniques to validate authorization for its presence. The identifier is independent of any other identifier in the message, such as in the author’s From: field. DKIM is also a TXT record signature that builds trust between the sender and the receiver.

3- DMARC(Domain-Based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance)

Domain-Based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance (DMARC), is an added authentication method that uses both SPF and DKIM to verify whether or not an email was actually sent by the owner of the “Friendly-From” domain that the user sees. In order for DMARC to pass, both SPF and DKIM must pass, and at least one of them must be aligned.
